The government-appointed commissioners of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), including the Chairperson and the Chief Elections Officer, continue to undermine the entity’s preparedness for the upcoming elections. Despite the evident need for measures to mitigate, if not eliminate, the risk of fraudulent voting—most notably, the implementation of digital identification at the polls—these officials persist in downplaying the threat.
Some, both locally and overseas, argue that GECOM’s current systems are sufficiently robust to prevent electoral fraud. However, the recent exposé by Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) revealing the existence of an ID card issued by GECOM to a holder who is not a bona fide registrant clearly exposes flaws and corruption within GECOM’s system, posing a significant threat to free, fair, and transparent elections. This incident is merely one example illustrating how fraudulent voting could occur. Evidence of such misconduct has previously been documented, covered up, and ignored.
This case demonstrates how an unauthorized voter could potentially cast a ballot undetected if the illegitimate holder of the card shows up at the polling station. GECOM’s so-called “robust” system must be able to detect and prevent such scenarios—not be compromised by them.
Electoral democracy should not be held hostage by those who refuse to address systemic vulnerabilities or who undermine the integrity of the process in the name of expediency.
