The Guyanese electorate has demonstrated a maturity that indicates that we are evolving. The 2025 Elections was not determined by race as a significant factor. Our young voters made that very clear.
The incumbent PPP is returned to office with an enhanced majority. This is thanks to the tireless hands-on work of the President, the meticulous planning of the Vice-President and the production-focused culture of Ministers inspired by good leadership.
The figure 27% has been attributed to the proportion of the electorate comprising first-time voters. Assuming a further 20% of the electorate were second-time voters and second-time eligible persons voting for the first time, that would mean 47% of voters being 28 and younger. The reality is that the median age in Guyana is 26 years – meaning that approximately half of all members of the Guyanese population are aged 26 and under.
What has just happened is that young people, more than half of our electorate, voted either for the continuation of structured developmental progress under PPP, or for WIN, opting for a clear break from a legacy 2-party system that has dogged us since Independence. Either way, it demonstrates very clearly that the youth of today, leaders and stewards of our heritage come tomorrow, are thinking and acting as Guyanese – without regard to race – just voting for policies or other very different motivations.
President Ali deserves the endorsement the people have given him – being the best option by far in any event – and he should continue to champion One Guyana, an initiative that has subliminally inspired our young people, or so it seems for real.
