Dear Editor,
A few years ago, a sign was erected in front of the J.E Burnham Nursery and Primary School in William Street, Kitty, to indicate to vehicular traffic, the presence of a school. This sign meant that caution should be exercised so that harm would not be inflicted on the pupils and even adults associated with the school. Approximately a year ago, the sign collapsed due to causes unknown to me and it was left on the parapet opposite the school, where it presently remains.
More than a month after I called the Ministry of Education and sent an email for the Permanent Secretary’s attention, the sign remains lying on the parapet. Motorists and cyclists who might be unaware of the school’s existence, could unexpectedly encounter a young pupil darting into the street while playing or crossing the street to get to the nearby shop. It is incomprehensible that there would not be regular inspections of schools which our valuable and vulnerable youth attend; by officials from the Ministry of Education.
Whoever from the Ministry tasked to have the sign installed, is obviously encouraged in a dereliction of duty, as ample time has elapsed for another senior official or member of staff of the Ministry or even a teacher at the school, to have noticed the absence of this important sign. Hopefully, this situation will be redressed with alacrity.
