Dear Editor,
I compliment Stabroek News for the article of November 7 (credited to a release from the University of Guyana) about the truly outstanding Maria Blucher, graduating from UG with a BSc in Biology.
Ms. Blucher deserves all the congratulations she has already received, and more. She is the stuff of education legends. The story of her scholarly path so far will no doubt be cited repeatedly, and with justification, by every Guyanese parent enduring long, late nights coaxing, cajoling, and motivating their young offspring struggling with their homework assignments, all the while groaning and grumbling, “This work too hard”.
I have every confidence that when Maria is ready to pursue further studies, she will apply and be favourably considered for a scholarship to support her in this endeavour. Guyana needs more Biology graduates, more science teachers, and more dentists.
Above all, Guyana needs more citizens with Maria’s indomitable drive and determination to succeed, not by avoiding but by conquering the obstacles and threats to success. Her thirst for knowledge, and for personal and academic growth and development should inspire even the most jaded and cynical student and educator in Guyana and beyond.
