As we mark one year since the tragic death of Mr. Carlton Smartt, a devoted husband, father of two, skilled electrician, and beloved community servant, we are reminded of the fragility of life and the urgent need for change. Mr. Smartt lost his life on Sheriff Street in Georgetown on November 19, 2024, struck down by a speeding truck. His passing left a young wife and two children to face life without him, while those responsible remain on bail, living the best of life.
We recall promises from Minister Juan Edghill to improve safety on our roadways and the condolences offered to the family. Yet, one year later, the carnage continues. Other families have received visits from Government officials after similar tragedies, but the Smartt family was overlooked. It is worth acknowledging Mayor Alfred Mentore, MP Amanza Walton-Desir, media executive Gordon Moseley and his employer Roy Bassoo, who stood with the family when few others did. Their compassion highlights the absence of broader leadership engagement and raises troubling questions about the state of social care in Guyana.
Carlton Smartt’s name will live on for the quiet impact he made in the lives of many Guyanese, never seeking recognition for his good deeds. His legacy calls us to reflect on the values of service, humility, and compassion.
I therefore urge both Government and Opposition to act decisively: address the reckless driving on our roads, strengthen accountability, and provide meaningful support for families shattered by such tragedies. Let us truly live out the vision of One Guyana, as one people, one nation, with one destiny.
