Dear Editor,
Tiger Bay has been in the news a lot lately, and as someone who has lived, worked, and invested in this community for years, I want to share a perspective from the ground.
Companies like German’s Restaurant have been a staple here—supporting schools, sponsoring community activities, providing meals, employing residents, and expanding our business footprint right in Tiger Bay. We believe in the area and its people, and we’ve put real investment behind that belief.
But alongside the positives, we also face serious challenges from some who operate businesses in the community without any regard for the environment or the people who live and work here. For months, one vulcanizing shop beside us has blocked the public pavement with garbage bins, tires, old engines, and even parked vehicles—forcing pedestrians, including school-children from Nations, to divert onto the main roadway just to pass. Those same garbage bins are frequently pushed in front of my driveway, blocking access entirely.
We’ve reported this repeatedly to the Georgetown City Council, but unfortunately nothing has been done. After exhausting every option, we were forced to take legal action.
If we are serious about renewal in Tiger Bay—if we truly want a safer, cleaner, revitalized community—then this kind of wanton disregard for residents, businesses, and basic public order must be addressed. Tiger Bay deserves better, and so do the people who live, work, and go to school here.
