Dear Editor,
I was present at the opening of the Demerara Harbour Bridge in 1978. This bridge, with a few mishaps, has served us well. As a slightly recognised poet, I am motivated to write a poem honouring this bridge. But this cannot be. Perhaps someone can do so if not yet done and published.
I am currently reading “Poems of New York,” (selected and edited by Elizabeth Schmidt). I am happy to read the poem by Hart Crane titled “The Brooklyn Bridge”. I wish to read a poem honouring the “The Demerara Harbour Bridge.” For me, I say to this lovely bridge, “Thank you, you of bridal adornment to me; thank you for your presence; thank you for serving us.”
