I am writing to bring to our attention two distressing cases that have raised serious concerns regarding medical malpractice, and adherence to established protocols, in our healthcare system.
The case of Deandre Prashad, who tragically passed away on September 22, 2025, at the Georgetown Public Hospital, warrants immediate investigation. Reports indicate that during a surgical procedure intended to remove one kidney, both kidneys were removed without prior disclosure to his family. The explanation provided by the medical staff—that the kidneys were conjoined—raises questions about the adequacy of pre-operative imaging, such as CT or MRI, which should have identified this condition well in advance.
Furthermore, the recent death of Latoya Griffith on November 20, 2025, at the New Amsterdam Hospital adds to the urgent need for accountability. Ms. Griffith, a high-risk patient, died after receiving drugs to induce labour prior to a scheduled Caesarian section. This incident again highlights a failure to follow established medical protocols that are crucial for ensuring patient safety, especially for those classified as high-risk.
Given these alarming situations, the Minister of Health ought to make public the corrective actions that have been taken in response to these cases. These corrective actions should address, inter alia, communication and compliance with protocols. The Minister should also advise on the necessary training initiatives being implemented to upgrade the skills and competencies of healthcare personnel, ensuring they adhere to the highest standards of medical practice.
These incidents reflect not only individual tragedies but also systemic challenges that must be addressed to restore public trust in our healthcare system. I urge the Ministry to take the actions necessary to prevent such occurrences in the future.
