The recent report by the highly respected internationally recognised news agency, The Telegraph in the UK, has claimed that UK taxpayers are being taken advantage of by Guyana. After a seven-month investigation by The Telegraph they uncovered that the £52 Million being invested in roadwork in the interior of Guyana from the UK’s international climate aid fund is “beset with fraud and corruption”. (Reference: Telegraph.co.uk, October 31st, 2025).
This additional allegation of fraud, which is like the one recently raised concerning GuySuco, demands the involvement of the FBI and Interpol in another thorough investigation to uncover what has happened and who is involved. The reputation of our Nation and the availability of future funding are at dire risk of being destroyed.
This serious allegation along with the recently reported problems at GuySuco, which span multiple administrations, both require an independent highly reputable external law enforcement agency such as the FBI to investigate. Unfortunately, the possibility of money laundering is high and given the seriousness of the allegations and the high office of those being implicated in these scandals it would be inappropriate to have our own people investigate. An external independent agency will provide the credibility necessary for the results of the investigation to be accepted by both sides of the political divide.
Our Nation has too much wealth for our citizens to be poor. The continual local and international allegations of corruption and fraud speak to a very irresponsible and greedy nature of those involved. When is enough enough? When will the weight of greed and theft be too much to carry? When will the people of our great nation decide that our nation’s wealth belongs to not a few but to all Guyanese? We must demand justice, and we must demand an end to the corruption and theft that are ruining the future prospects of our nation.
For the last ten years the Guyanese people have demanded a fair deal with Exxon and have demanded a fair share of our nation’s wealth. To date, this has been met with excuses while our people continue to struggle to make ends meet. Instead of handouts give our people a hand up. Instead of government grants give our people their rightful share. We need the fraud and corruption to end so the money can be fairly distributed to all Guyanese. Remember who it was that had more than his fair share and died from the lack of resources of his own making. This is the irony of greed and corruption. Bring in the FBI and other independent agencies to lead the cleaning up of our government ministries and key public institutions. It is in everyone’s best interest that we put an end to this as soon as possible before we lose more of our people due to theft.
Remember, it doesn’t take much for a prosperous country to become poor. Guyana has experienced this in the past, and we can look to the west at Venezuela and see their fall from riches. Our leaders must learn to be content with what they have been blessed with. You came into this world with nothing and so shall you leave. Treat your fellow Guyanese fairly and do not steal from our nation and other nations that are helping us.
