Dear Editor,
It takes a man with the extraordinary intellectual capacity of Mohabir Anil Nandlall to come up with some of the gems that he discovers and then is bold enough to hold them aloft. Mr Nandlall, the erudite and always effervescent (when convenient) attorney general of Guyana, let loose on the disparity in Guyanese reactions to the Mohameds situation. He put the best side of his mouth for the cameras. Concerns acknowledged for the process to commence, and a Leader of the Opposition (LOO) finalized, taking up his place in parliament. Well done, good and faithful attorney general. Then, Mr. Nandlall went off the rails. He lamented how Guyanese are selective in their concerns, their priorities and distresses, over the same prime candidate for LOO, and not giving a damn about his fugitive offender status (as alleged, as still unsettled). I think that Mr. Nandlall is on fair ground with his lament. I think also that the same Mr. Mohabir Anil Nandlall cut the ground from under his own feet, due to a case of temporary amnesia. I help him to recover his memory.
In 2015-2016, the FBI informed the APNU+AFC Govt that its radar was focused on the gold dealing community. Public knowledge that came to be. How could Mr. Nandlall forget? Also, sometime after the 2018 no-confidence motion, the then irrepressible, omnipresent American Ambassador to Guyana, Excellency Sarah Ann Lynch, made a booboo that she never (never) repeated. It ought to have been embedded in the head of Dr. Nandlall like nothing else. As a memory aid for Mohabir Nandlall, the ambassadorial slip was of accepting an aircraft tour from a member of the gold sector. Excellency Lynch shut up shop, which should have been a warning for Nandlall if he didn’t know. But he can’t go there, since his business is about knowing and not denying knowing.
Now that Anil Nandlall is Guyana’s Public Lamenter Number One, I give him a nudge. When Excellency Lynch slammed the door shut on further association with Guyana’s gold community, who was it that opened another door and entered a different place? Was it not, Mr. Nandlall, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali on his way to the ramparts of the National Cultural Centre for his swearing in on that warm August day? Nobody in the PPP gave a rat’s behind about FBI radars, and Homeland Security anxieties back then. Nobody in the PPP Govt between August 2020 and June 11, 2024 had any laments about gold, about smuggling, about tax, until OFAC let loose with both barrels. Remember that, Mr. Nandlall? In fact, in the PPP Govt, there was none, absolutely not one, who was willing to raise their hand and say that they fall in the category labeled government official (OFAC again!). It is still so. Suddenly, Irfaan Ali the Infallible is not a govt official. Bharrat Jagdeo the Gemstone is not a govt official. And, Anil Nandlall the Fugitive Offender Lamenter is not a govt official. Dr. Ali is a purist. Dr. Jagdeo is a pugilist. Dr. Nandlall is jurist. Dem nah bin in govt, and none ah dem nah deh in guvment nah muh. Dem lie low until dem pull Mae T out ah de fiuh. Voila! No PPP Govt official in that Mohamed mess. The PPP of Jagdeo found a new government official and planted him in the middle where many in the PPP drank soup and sipped champagne. How about saying something on that, to help out the situation, Dr. Nandlall? Guyana is waiting, Mr. Man of the Law.
If the Hon. Anil Nandlall is to be taken at his word, the PPP Govt (and leadership) doesn’t entertain those kinds of relationships (the Mohameds, as reference). The PPP Govt doesn’t have any manner of dealing with those types of people (the Mohameds, for example). The PPP Govt doesn’t mingle with people who were alleged to be on FBI and other American radars. Now, here comes the Mighty Mohabir Nandlall to wash the PPP Govt’s hands of any supporting of fugitive offender. From Ali the showman to Jagdeo the gamesman, and now to Nandlall pretending to be Batman. Flitting all over.
