Dear Editor,
The AFC is dead and buried, the PNCR/APNU is finding it hard to recover from an electoral blow that has now found itself in the history books and the WIN party is yet to see its leader take up his seat as Leader of the Opposition. The ruling PPP has made all of the above a reality.
The Opposition seems unable even to clinch a win at the regional level; Region Ten is yet to have a Regional Chairman. The view from my vantage point is dismal.
The WIN party is now the main opposition and its leader has more personal legal troubles than any other politician in our nation’s history. He awaits the outcome of an extradition hearing. None can argue whether there is justification or not in that regard but the nation knows that the legal troubles faced by the WIN party leader are politically motivated and engineered.
While the WIN party leader could possibly be fingered as a corrupt citizen whose wealth was largely amassed through illegal access to our nation’s resources, he cannot and must not be regarded as a corrupt politician.
In all of the foregoing, it must not miss us that the future and prosperity of Guyana is in a state of limbo and solutions must come to see a change in what obtains.
The PPP has convinced a large cross-section of Guyanese that the current opposition parties are tainted, incompetent and unfit to be in the political opposition much less being in the seat of government.
Meanwhile, the PPP government is pressing on with corruption; several of its officials are accused of corruption at the national levels and the government cannot even be bothered to respond to those allegations and why should they when there is no real mechanism to hold them accountable or forced their hands to correct the wrongs and practice good governance.
What Guyana cries out for at the moment is the emergence of a multicultural political party with no baggage perceived or real that will replace the late AFC and offer the opportunity of restored confidence in our country’s politics.
The restoration of integrity in politics in Guyana is urgently needed for all Guyanese to have hope in benefiting from a country that has untold wealth and is dominated by the PPP.
The people of Guyana know that the PPP is unfit to surmount the task of bringing good governance to the country but they have somehow been influenced by the narrative that there is no strong opposition at present. A narrative that gains traction because of the lack of any evidence of real and results based performance by the opposition.
The framework that will allow the current opposition parties to perform their mandated tasks is being daily dismantled by the PPP. The opposition parties cry out but the people do not need cry babies while they are crying out because of poverty, social and societal collapse, and severe economic pressures.
We must believe that a change must come. We must dare to look outside the box. We must find the energy to start from scratch again. We must present to the people options that are fresh, clean and credible. Therefore, my political sojourn to save Guyana from the PPP must follow that path. Guyana must be saved.
