Debate on ExxonMobil Oil Deal

Dear Editor,

The recent letters to SN written by Christoper Ram and then the response by Kit Nascimento reveal the confused and confusing references to our oil deal with ExxonMobil, with the likelihood that the Guyanese public will respond by staying home in the next elections unless a viable alternative emerges to lead our country forward. Ram carries on and on (yawn), along with others like GHK Lall, about getting Exxon to the table when they know very well that the deals struck by the PPP and APNU are binding for the near future and cannot be broken, even with the nonsense Ram and his anti-Exxon pals expouse; Ram is fixated on the Exxon deal, pushing the door to open his political ambitions, along with his pals like Lall, who already has, in his confused mind, achieved the title of the Socrates of Guyana with his effusive writings, most of them against Exxon – he should remember the tragic end of Socrates.

Editor, Nascimento, on the other hand, is an old hand in propaganda (especially against my father, President Cheddi, whom he despised in a very public way, in previous years) and his letter does destroys Ram and his pals’ nonsense, but his job is to deflect criticism of his new master, the PPP; his points about Venezuela are exactly correct. His explanation of the situation between Guyana and Exxon with the oil contracts are absolutely correct; his dissection of Ram’s experience and knowledge on the oil sector was devastating, to say the least. Ram and his pals should stick to accounting and the laws of Guyana and leave Exxon alone. As I have said before, Exxon is the best thing that ever happened for Guyana and all Guyanese should welcome Exxon’s presence here – look at all the things we could use that oil money for to better our country and to help our poor.

By pulverizing Ram and his pals, Nascimento diverts the real question of the day – Exxon doesn’t run Guyana, they just give us our share (and we will have to get a bigger share in the years to come) but the PPP government in power today controls all that money – our money – and without consultation, agreements and unity they ignore the opposition and citizens’ sentiments and do as they like.

Sincerely,

Cheddi (Joey) Jagan (Jr.)
