Reform of Vice President's Media Appearances

Dear Editor,

I am writing to suggest a constructive shift in the format of Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo’s daily media appearances. While his insights are valuable or mundane, it is time for other ministers to be given the opportunity to appear on his show and speak directly to the public about the important work within their respective portfolios. Each minister brings unique expertise or not to their position, and hearing from them in-depth would provide a clearer understanding of their departments’ priorities, challenges, and successes. I do have in mind several initial candidates…

Moreover, I believe Jagdeo himself should play a more interactive role by engaging his ministers with questions regarding the technical, political, social, and economic aspects of their respective portfolios. By asking probing questions, Jagdeo could ensure that ministers are not only accountable but also given a platform to explain the intricacies of their work to the public. This would promote greater transparency, foster deeper public understanding, and hold ministers to higher standards of governance. This I believe may avoid a future 5:30am meeting with the president.

Incorporating this approach would offer a more comprehensive view of the government’s efforts across different sectors, allowing citizens to hear from the ministers who are directly responsible for key areas such as education, health, infrastructure, and energy. It would also allow for more dynamic and meaningful discussions that address the diverse issues affecting our nation. I believe such a shift would greatly benefit both the government and the people, helping to foster more inclusive and informed political discourse. Enough with responding to the opposition statements, which have always been ignored by many in the government.

Sincerely,

Keith Bernard
