Guyana's Defence Spending and Regional Security

Dear Editor,

Recent comparisons of military budgets between Guyana and Venezuela in 2023 highlight a striking contrast. Venezuela, historically known for its robust military spending, allocated only $3.9 million USD to defence last year, a sharp decline caused by economic turmoil. In contrast, Guyana allocated approximately $96.2 million USD, signaling a strong commitment to national security and regional stability.

With the 2025 national budget of $1.382 trillion GYD ($6.6 billion USD) recently unveiled, this is a pivotal moment for Guyana to strengthen its defence posture further. Venezuela’s reduced military spending presents a unique opportunity for Guyana to enhance its military capabilities, ensuring it can adequately address ongoing border issues and protect its sovereignty amidst regional uncertainty.

However, the government’s failure to clearly break down defence spending in the national budget is concerning. Transparency in how these funds are allocated is essential for building public trust and demonstrating that investments in national security are both strategic and effective. As Guyana transforms into an oil-driven economy, its growing wealth makes it a potential target for external aggression, further underscoring the need for a well-funded and well-equipped defence force.

The government must seize this opportunity to allocate more resources to defence while maintaining fiscal accountability. By openly detailing defence spending, it can reassure citizens that their tax dollars are being used to safeguard national interests, secure the nation’s borders, and deter potential threats.

Guyana is at a turning point. Strengthening its defence in light of Venezuela’s weakened military position will not only protect its sovereignty but also solidify its role as a regional leader in security and governance.

Sincerely,

Keith Bernard
