Leadership Challenges in the Opposition
Dear Editor,
We are obviously in what seems to be quite an interesting election season. Many are still trying to decipher what this means for the current opposition dispensation. Recent opinions, rants and ramblings have clearly signaled that the current Opposition Leader and Leader of the People’s National Congress-Reform, Aubrey Norton, in the eyes of the public is unfit for the Presidential Candidacy seat. And enters, Nigel Hughes of the Alliance for Change – there may very well be a sudden gravitation to him – however; the fact is, Mr. Hughes cannot be trusted politically – who knows how long it will take for him to throw down his bat and ball and walk away for a better game – perhaps a game that will provide more money and some amount of peace of mind for himself.
This writer believes that people are only gravitating toward Mr. Hughes because of their dislike for Mr. Norton – and there are many, especially among the youth who cannot relate to Aubrey Norton and his “policies”. In essence, young people don’t know Aubrey Norton – he is not a household name among the youth, and unfortunately for him and his current “team”, he doesn’t carry the same weight or punch that former President David Granger carried in 2011 and in 2015. So let’s focus on what back then was the youth of the People’s National Congress-Reform – like them or not, the names Christopher Jones, Sharma Solomon and Gifford Marshall became household names back in 2011, and dare I say if the political light is shown on these men again, they will do a darn good job – more so Chris Jones who is the now Opposition Chief Whip and once the Chairman of the Guyana Youth and Student movement.
These men who are not so young anymore in age, but very young in the political arena can rally the young people and possibly revive and bring back some of the youths who were unfortunately disenchanted by David Granger and his merry army band. They have charisma, popularity, and personality – the young voters can also relate to them – a task at which Mr. Norton is failing miserably. Maybe Mr. Norton himself may want to take a page out of former PNC-R and former Opposition Leader Robert Corbin’s book and put party and country before himself and STEP ASIDE! You’re already in opposition sir, roll the dice – do something to at least preserve your party/partnership – because at this point, it is highly doubtful that the opposition, whether they go it alone or together, can secure a victory at the 2025 polls given what they are up against. It’s time for new blood in the PNC-R leadership.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Ann Bailey
