As a public communications analyst, I wish to express measured concern regarding Guyana’s border security in light of rapidly developing international events involving Venezuela. Recent reports circulating in global media underscore the need for heightened vigilance, strategic preparedness, and responsible national dialogue, particularly as regional dynamics continue to evolve
International news outlets have reported that United States President Donald Trump stated that U.S. forces launched a military operation in Venezuela and that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured during the operation. While these reports are still unfolding and details remain subject to verification, their potential implications for regional stability cannot be ignored.
Against this backdrop, Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity—especially along its western border—must remain a paramount national priority. Guyana has consistently demonstrated its commitment to international law, peaceful coexistence, and diplomatic engagement, and it is within this framework that vigilance and readiness must continue to guide national security policy.
It is therefore reassuring that Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, is currently in Region One engaging ranks of the Guyana Defence Force and the Guyana Police Force. Such leadership presence reinforces morale, coordination, and preparedness among the country’s security institutions at a time when situational awareness is particularly important
It is also prudent to anticipate possible humanitarian and migration pressures arising from instability in Venezuela, including the movement of persons seeking asylum or temporary refuge in Guyana and other CARICOM states. Guyana must be prepared to manage any such developments in a structured, lawful, and humane manner, balancing compassion with national security and resource capacity
At this critical juncture, political parties and national stakeholders must place the national interest above partisan considerations. Unity, clear communication, and steady leadership send a powerful message that Guyana’s sovereignty transcends political differences and that the nation remains calm, cohesive, and prepared in the face of regional uncertainty.
