Dear Editor,
I commend our President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali for his calm and measured response to developments in neighbouring Venezuela. The position taken by President Ali, in my view, fully accords with our national and security interests especially in the context of threats to our national sovereignty and territorial integrity by the Maduro regime.
The political situation in Venezuela is at best uncertain and the approach by President Ali for close monitoring is both sensible and necessary at this critical moment not only for Guyana but for the region as a whole.
Whatever else can be said of President Maduro, he has demonstrated scant regard for the norms of democracy and the rule of international law as evidenced by his aggressive stance against Guyana and seeking to ‘annex’ Guyana’s Essequibo region comprising nearly two-thirds of sovereign territory.
It is interesting to see how developments in Venezuela will unfold but one thing seems certain, namely that the political dynamics in that country will not be the same and could possibly evolve to a higher level of democratic governance.
