Dear Editor,
However frequently during 2025 published reservations about the Guyana Sugar Corporation‘s (GuySuCo) production and productivity have overflowed into the new year, without any promise of substantive progress emanating, even from the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) himself. What one sees and hears are about underperformance even for the foreseeable future, more specifically in Field (Agriculture) and Factory (Engineering).
This enquiry is about the critical human resources factor which normally drives the quality of any production and productivity. There has been little or no mention about the process of recruitment, qualification/training, performance evaluation, promotions; nor indeed resignations/dismissals, more so at the senior levels. No mention of technical meetings across Estates to compare/contrast reasons for success or failure.
For decades now GuySuCo has ceased to be an employer of choice. Current publicity makes it the opposite, thus the critical need for investing in human resources development. Surely, there must be some identifiable successes who can be emanated, opportunities that can be utilised for development – like the Guyana School of Agriculture, University of Guyana both of which history would reveal were beneficially attended; and inspired in internal brainstorming sessions and in turn related volumes of reading established in my time – mostly at the Head Office and at Albion/PM Estate, then an inspiring example of consistent productivity.
The latter has been the experience of this retired Human Resources Director of GuySuCo.
