Dear Editor,
The public outcry for Speaker Manzoor Nadir to resign, or be removed from office, is fully justified to preserve/bring about the “democratic integrity, constitutional order, and public confidence in Parliament”. Speaker Nadir’s un-speaker-like treatment of the opposition MPs during the last parliament was not something that is expected from any Speaker who must be seen to be non-partisan.
In addition, at the present time, Mr. Nadir has given reason for concern that he has raised the bar for his mis-treatment of opposition MPs and by extension, just under half the people of Guyana. It is widely believed that Mr. Nadir was influenced by powerful others to take the actions as regards the selection of the Leader of the Opposition. Putting country first, it is now necessary for the same others to demand the speaker’s resignation or removal to avoid any more unfavourable unintended consequences for the ruling party.
With the embedded vote-party-line majority, PPP/C can afford to demand the speaker manages Parliament to the highest standards.
