Dear Editor,
I wish to draw the public’s attention to a matter of grave importance to me which I have pursued unsuccessfully for the past two decades. I am a former Overseer of the Ordinance NDC where I worked for 29 years. I am currently a licensed Real Estate Agent, a Valuation Officer, a Rural Constable and a trained Private Investigator. I am fully au fait with the Laws of Guyana and in particular Chapter 28:01 and 28:02.
Some 25 years ago I applied to be approved as a Justice of Peace [JP]. Since then I have applied two other times with not even an acknowledgement of my application. I live in No 2 Village, East Canje and my application was based on the fact that no JP is resident in the No.2/Cumberland/Canefield area, East Canje where thousands of residents live. On numerous occasions I have been approached by residents seeking the services of a JP.. My last application was sent directly to the Attorney General and again it was not even acknowledged. Just before the last elections several individuals were sworn-in as JPs with some only semi-literate and one reportedly visually impaired.
My reason for applying is not because of financial considerations but because of the dire need in the communities which I have worked in and served for many years. I do hope that this letter will result in the authorities responsible for granting approval to revisit my applications and eventually grant my request.
