Dear Editor,
It is with profound sorrow that A New and United Guyana (ANUG) learnt of the passing of Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, 83, earlier today, February 23, 2026.
On behalf of our entire organisation, ANUG, we extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to his family, his friends, and his loved ones during this time of immense grief. We hope that the outpouring of respect from across the nation will provide them with some measure of comfort as they navigate this difficult period.
Dr. Roopnaraine was, without question, a political stalwart par excellence. In an arena often marked by shifting sands and transient loyalties, he stood as an immovable pillar of principle. His journey in Guyana’s political landscape was defined not by the pursuit of power or personal acclaim, but by an unwavering commitment to the values and ideals he held dear.
He was a rare breed of leader who refused to compromise his integrity for political expediency. This steadfastness earned him the respect of allies and adversaries alike. His voice, always reasoned and resolute, contributed significantly to the national discourse, challenging us all to aspire to a higher standard of political engagement.
Dr. Roopnaraine’s legacy is not merely one of service, but one of character. He leaves behind a blueprint for political conduct that emphasises conviction over convenience. While his presence will be deeply missed, his example will continue to inspire those who believe that politics can and should be a noble calling.
May his soul find eternal peace, and may his family find the strength to bear this irreparable loss.
