Dear Editor,
Because of America’s claim of labour exploitation, Guyana hastily abandoned its long standing arrangement with Cuba for medics. Why was the sanctity of agreement with Cuba ignored, but sanctity of contract with ExxonMobil is doggedly maintained?
America found a way to identify the Cuban medical programme as human trafficking. The world says that ExxonMobil is exploiting Guyana but America is yet to threaten ExxonMobil to follow international oil industry standards with Guyana’s oil. Will America ever judge Guyana’s oil contract with ExxonMobil to be exploitative, and which may be a result of undue influence on Guyana by ExxonMobil? Perhaps the well-paid US lobbyists should be redirected to badger the US administration of this injustice.
There may be precise differences between agreements and contracts, but the obligation should always be fairness to all parties involved.
