The decision by the Government of Guyana, led by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), to end the service of Cuban doctors in Guyana is both unprincipled and deeply concerning for the welfare of the Guyanese people.
For many years, Cuban medical professionals have served our country with dedication and compassion. They have worked quietly in communities across Guyana, particularly in rural and hinterland areas where access to healthcare is often limited. Many families have come to rely on their presence, and countless lives have been touched by the care and professionalism they have provided.
It is therefore difficult to understand why a government that proudly speaks about Guyana being one of the fastest-growing economies in the world would take a step that could weaken the delivery of healthcare to its citizens. With the resources now available to the state, the expectation of the Guyanese people is that healthcare services will improve and expand—not that experienced medical professionals who have been serving our communities will be removed.
This issue goes beyond politics. At its heart, it concerns the wellbeing of ordinary people—especially the elderly, the poor, and those living in remote communities who depend heavily on accessible medical care.
Healthcare should never become a casualty of political decisions or external pressures. The responsibility of any government is first and foremost to protect and promote the wellbeing of its citizens. Ending the service of these doctors without presenting a clear, immediate, and effective alternative raises legitimate concerns about how the healthcare needs of many Guyanese will be met.
The government would do well to carefully reconsider this approach and ensure that the health and dignity of the Guyanese people remain the top priority. True national progress is not measured only by economic growth, but also by the strength of the systems that care for our people.
At the end of the day, it is ordinary Guyanese families who depend on a reliable healthcare system. Their needs and concerns must never be overlooked.
