Dear Editor,
As a craftsman with years of experience in the tourism industry, I have come to understand the true value of bamboo—not only as a material, but as an economic and environmental asset. For years, I have invested time and effort into educating and influencing craftsmen in both Barbados and Guyana on the many benefits and practical uses of this remarkable resource.
Despite these efforts, I have observed through ongoing conversations with craftsmen and interested citizens that many still do not fully appreciate the vast potential of bamboo. This is particularly concerning when one considers that, globally, the bamboo industry has grown into a multi-million-dollar powerhouse over the last decade, driving innovation and sustainable development across several countries.
Guyana is uniquely positioned to benefit from this growing industry. As an emerging eco-tourism destination with an already thriving forestry sector, the integration of bamboo into our economic framework can set us apart regionally and internationally. Its rapid growth, renewability, and strength make it an ideal resource for sustainable expansion.
The applications of bamboo are wide-ranging and practical. From construction and furniture manufacturing to its increasing use in healthcare and beauty products, bamboo continues to prove its versatility. It offers an environmentally friendly alternative to more traditional materials, while also creating opportunities for small businesses and skilled artisans to thrive.
Since 2023, initiatives such as the National Forest Restoration Initiative have created an avenue for greater awareness and participation in sustainable industries, including bamboo cultivation and production. These efforts should be embraced and expanded, as they provide a pathway for citizens at all levels to contribute meaningfully to national development.
I therefore encourage Guyanese—whether farmers, craftsmen, entrepreneurs, or investors—to explore the many opportunities within the bamboo sector. With the right focus and commitment, this industry can play a significant role in shaping a more sustainable and economically resilient future for our country.
