Dear Editor,
We arrived with expectations
Agreement made and contract signed
Payment to be made and return guaranteed
After keeping our commitments betrayal awaited
Contract broken and agreement discarded
They kept not their word
Promises broken and advantage taken
We looked upon the land and saw opportunity
We made the most of what was before us
We made this land ours
Remembering the circumstances that kept us here
Remembering what they did to us
Remembering to not trust so easily
We arrived with expectations
God took us and changed our lives for the better
A strange land has now become ours
A land where we can become strong
A land where we overcame those who took advantage of us
We arrived with expectations
We stay because we became stronger
We stay because our ancestors also rest here
We stay because this land is now also ours
And we say
Never again will they cheat us!
We came with expectations
Expectations still held today
They come to our shores again
Trying to get their own way
Contract in hand
Obtained by unscrupulous means
They say we must honour it
While they deceive
My brothers and sisters
Let’s learn from our past
We must renegotiate for fair terms
Before they try to economically enslave us
As they did when that mainstay was cast
Freedom is ours to keep
We must not give it away
The future is ours
Let’s not waste our arrival day
In honour of the arrival of our ancestors!
