Dear Editor,
Please allow me to publicly thank my friend and (former) colleague, Dr. James Rose, for sending me the link to last Sunday’s (May 17, 2026) presentation of the Indo-Caribbean Cultural Centre, which took the form of the launch of Prof. Baytoram Ramharack’s book,
“The Wismar Massacre: A Case of Cleansing Of Indians In Guyana”.
As I listened to the various contributors, I thought of the several instances of ethnic conflict in Guyana and the influence they must have on President Ali’s call for national unity. I also reflected on the Guyanese maxim that ‘story has more than one side’, and Eusi Kwayana’s publication, ‘No Guilty Race’.
In the end, I concluded that the President could enhance his appeal, by establishing a Truth and Reconciliation Commission as was done by Nelson Mandela in South Africa.
