Dear Editor,
After suffering a crushing defeat at the polls, the opposition parties have embarked upon a nitpicking campaign to unseat the PPP/C. They have embarked on a series of approaches aimed at discrediting the government, it typically relies on spreading false information, rumours, manipulated truths and sensational gossip to sway public opinion. The press for its own part, has aided this campaign as it churns out its own form of tabloid journalism on a regular basis. They have granted opposition maximum airtime. This form of journalism hopes to irreparably damage the reputation of the present government. But is The Opposition gaining the attention they so desperately crave? I think not, because instead of bringing the government down, the opposition exposes themselves in the public space.
For starters, the lead attention seeker, trumps up that corruption charge on the government, hoping to gain political mileage, but is he? However, instead of gaining the traction in the public arena, he has in essence opened the searchlight on himself. So, we ask questions, is the government under surveillance? Is the PPP/C Government under the spell of a sanction? And the answer is no, the government is not in any way under the corrupt microscope, rather the accuser is the one that has questions to answer to The USA on corruption and money laundering charges. So, as the extradition noose tightens around the neck of this chief nuisance maker, the more he will accentuate the negatives in society.
His corruption call rings hollow, in just the same way The Coalition did in 2015. In that 2015 period they cried corruption, Corruption, the treasury is empty! and on their accession to office in a two-month period, raised their salaries by 50%. In that regard, they exposed themselves before The Guyanese Public as the main source of corruption. Because while you shout corruption and the treasury is empty, in the same vein when you got into power went after the same treasury and did that which you were accusing the former government of. As a consequence, the people of this country rejected that corruption call in a profound way and in just the same way the people would have rejected the main opposition.
