Dear Editor,
I write to express my serious concern and outright condemnation of the troubling lethargy displayed by the administration of Guyana National Assembly to appoint the nine-member Parliamentary Standing Committee on Appointment.
The September 1, 2025 election is long gone yet Parliament, of which the current government enjoys a majority, has failed to appoint the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Appointment- a body comprising five representatives from the government and four from the opposition, -We Invest in Nationhood – WIN- Political Party. The current Leader of the Opposition, MP Azruddin Mohamed, his cadre of MP’s, and all Guyanese, are experiencing the thunderous silence from the Guyana National Assembly’s Administration on this constitutional deadlock/ roadblock/ gridlock.
Editor, this committee is not a formality; it is constitutionally and operationally vital. It is responsible for vetting and enabling a host of other appointments that allow Guyana’s business to proceed for the optimal welfare of all Guyanese. Its absence creates a dangerous vacuum: key oversight mechanisms are paralyzed, and there is no functional body to hold the government accountable for its inaction or to scrutinize critical appointments.
Let us be clear: the government, paid by taxpayers, currently holds the majority of votes in Parliament. Yet rather than lead, it appears content to hold Guyana hostage through deliberate inaction. This is not governance; it is dereliction.
The people of Guyana demand better.
Come Friday, June 5, 2026, the Guyana National Assembly will be in session.
Will the appointments of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Appointment be tabled and effectuated?
If not, we call on the National Assembly to immediately leverage this constitutional mandate and reconstitute this committee without further delay. The business of the nation and the welfare of its citizens cannot be held ransom to political lethargy.
