Dear Editor,
My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Venezuela at this very difficult time following two devastating earthquakes. While I am in full support of the government’s efforts to send relief supplies to Venezuela, I am baffled and aghast over the government’s decision to utilise the facilities of the Central Islam Organisation of Guyana as the sole collection point according to what I have gleaned from the newspapers.
We have an entity known as the CDC (Civil Defence Commission) headed by Colonel Nazrul Hussein located on Thomas lands, which has a suitable premises that should be adequate to serve as the central collection point and as the army is involved in the effort even the GDF compound could be used as they have the men and machines and other resources to handle this task efficiently.
So, this begs the question why the CIOG? I think those in authority should note that persons from other groups are watching this closely and will ask why the Hindu and Christian groups have not been asked to assist or indeed other organisations such as the Guyana Red Cross etcetera who may have experience in these types of operations.
Looking forward eagerly to answers from the competent authorities.
