Dear Editor,
The solution is simple. If the government keeps avoiding ensuring transparency and accountability in the spending of taxpayers’ money, the opposition must carry out the work of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) without them. The members of the committee must continue the work required by the constitution and lay it before the national assembly as a separate analysis. This will ensure that the concerns which Comrade Teixeira and her cohorts appear to be avoiding addressing are brought before the public. The government will then have no choice but to address the findings of the opposition.
This also creates an opportunity for the opposition to present any illegalities found to the relevant authorities for further investigation. Years of record spending via record budgets without scrutiny by the PAC should be of concern to all voters. It’s our money and they are not allowed to go through their time in office without being held accountable for how it is spent. Running from the truth will not prevent it from coming to light. The work of the public accounts committee must be carried out one way or the other. The government must be held accountable for their use of taxpayers’ money!
