On behalf of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) UK Branch and the wider Guyanese Diaspora community in the United Kingdom, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones and friends who have suffered the devastating loss of relatives in the tragic sinking of the MV Barima off the coast of Guyana.
This heart-breaking incident stands as one of the most tragic maritime disasters in our nation’s history. As we mourn the loss of over seventy-nine precious lives—men, women and children—we stand in solidarity with every family whose lives have been forever changed by this unimaginable tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are also with those who survived this ordeal, and with the emergency responders who worked tirelessly in the aftermath.
While this is a time for mourning, it must also be a time for reflection. We owe it to those who perished to examine the circumstances that led to this disaster, to identify the lessons that must be learned, and to ensure that meaningful action is taken to prevent such a tragedy from ever occurring again.
We cannot control the forces of nature or the unpredictable waters of the Atlantic Ocean. However, we can and must ensure that every possible measure is taken to safeguard the lives of passengers and crew. This includes maintaining the highest standards for the seaworthiness of vessels, enforcing strict safety regulations, conducting comprehensive safety inspections before every voyage, and ensuring that emergency equipment and procedures are always in place and fully operational. We commend the quick action taken by the Guyanese Government in its initial response to this tragedy.
As Guyanese, both at home and abroad, we share in this profound grief. May the memories of those who lost their lives remain forever in our hearts, and may their passing strengthen our collective resolve to build a safer future for all who travel our waterways.
