We should not have to import chicken

Dear Editor,

The suggestion by the Guyana poultry association to temporarily import chickens should be one to be reconsidered by the government. This suggestion if materialized could create some form of worry and uneasiness especially among our local poultry farmers.

Editor one would have thought that the government would have consulted our local poultry farmers first and come to some agreement with them to do business.

Editor Guyana is or was known as the bread basket of the Caribbean, however over the years citizens have been complaining about a spike in the cost of living. I remember too that Stabroek News used to carry a piece about the cost of living and how it was affecting residents.^[1]

Editor I am a Guyanese based overseas and keeping up with the daily events that continue to unfold in my country. I am shocked to learn about the rising cost of living.

Vegetables the likes of pumpkin, ochro, bora, calaloo are fetching hefty prices not forgetting ground provision and poultry. Editor, while persons living in the outskirts of Georgetown have an advantage to farm those living in the city might find it difficult. I say all of this to say that we should not have to even consider importing chickens when the government can assist Guyanese who already rear their own poultry to take up those jobs. The government needs to invest in our local farmers because at the end of the day it is going to be more feasible to rear locally than to have chickens being imported from who knows where.

Editor people are becoming wiser by the minute and they are also health conscious. We are also seeing a rise in health complaints.
