THE recent column on the expansion of Chinese-owned supermarkets has sparked an important conversation about foreign investment and competition in Guyana. However, while scrutiny of any sector is healthy, the discussion must be grounded in facts rather than speculation.
For thousands of Guyanese families, these supermarkets have brought undeniable benefits. They have improved access to affordable groceries and household essentials, particularly in communities that once had limited shopping options.
Their competitive pricing, extended operating hours and wider product selection have given consumers greater choice and convenience, while encouraging competition across the retail sector.
These businesses have also contributed to local economies by creating jobs, renting or purchasing commercial properties, supporting service providers and stocking many locally manufactured products.
Their presence has challenged the retail industry to improve customer service, inventory management and overall shopping standards, developments that ultimately benefit consumers.
The real policy question is not whether foreign investment should be welcomed, but whether all businesses, regardless of ownership, comply with Guyana’s laws, pay their taxes, treat employees fairly and compete on a level playing field.
That is the responsibility of our regulatory institutions, and they should continue to enforce those standards without prejudice.
Guyana is experiencing unprecedented economic growth and is attracting investors from around the world.
We should embrace investment that creates opportunities, strengthens communities and improves consumers’ quality of life, while ensuring robust oversight through transparent and evidence-based regulation. Progress is best served by informed debate, not fear of the unknown.
