It is heartening as a citizen to see the Government of Guyana consistently prioritising healthcare infrastructure, particularly by extending services beyond the long-established coastal areas. The ongoing construction of new hospitals in Moruca, Kato, and Lethem marks a significant advancement worthy of acknowledgement.
For decades, people living in Guyana’s remote interior regions have struggled to access medical care. Geographic isolation, limited transportation options, and long distances often turn routine health visits into arduous undertakings. In urgent cases, families may face hours of travel, accompanied by high costs and logistical difficulties.
These new facilities signal a tangible shift toward addressing those challenges. In Region One, the Moruca hospital will bring updated medical services within reach of local residents and nearby villages. This improvement is especially meaningful for families who previously had to journey long distances for specialised treatment.
Likewise, the facility in Kato will serve as a vital healthcare hub for Region Eight. For communities spread across the Potaro-Siparuni area, better access to medical care can significantly improve outcomes, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, older adults, and pregnant women who depend on timely interventions.
In Lethem, the new hospital is expected to benefit not only the town but also the broader Rupununi region and surrounding areas. As Lethem has grown into a key regional node, a modern medical facility there will enhance service delivery for both local residents and those arriving from distant hinterland settlements.
From a public perspective, these projects go beyond bricks and mortar. They reflect a commitment to making healthcare more accessible, easing the strain of long-distance travel, and ensuring that a person’s location does not limit their access to quality medical services.
The government merits recognition for understanding the value of investing in healthcare for inland communities.
