Dear Editor,
My name is Vishul Ishwaridin. This is my proposal that outlines a plan for the Government of Guyana to build and operate state-managed supermarkets and hardware stores across all administrative regions. The initiative aims to provide direct relief to citizens facing high living costs by offering essential food staples and building supplies at controlled, affordable prices.
Main Benefits
- Affordable Pricing: State-run facilities operating on a small-profit or cost-recovery model can eliminate excessive private markups, keeping basic groceries and construction materials affordable.
- Direct Job Creation: Building and running these stores will create employment nationwide for managers, cashiers, warehouse workers, drivers, and labourers.
- Regional Equality: Standardised pricing across all regions will ensure residents in remote or hinterland areas pay the exact same price for essentials as those on the coast.
- Support for Local Agriculture: Government supermarkets can buy directly from local farmers and food producers, guaranteeing them a stable market and fair prices.
Plan of Action
- Phase 1 (Planning & Design): Identify suitable state-owned land in major towns (such as Georgetown, New Amsterdam, Linden, Parika, Bartica, and Lethem) and calculate initial startup budgets.
- Phase 2 (Construction & Hiring): Construct the initial stores and launch a regional recruitment drive to fill operational and management positions.
- Phase 3 (Sourcing): Set up direct bulk supply agreements with local farmers, domestic manufacturers, and international exporters to keep stock prices low.
- Phase 4 (Pilot Launch): Open the first set of stores to test operations, with plans to expand into smaller communities across all 10 regions.
Recommendation
By investing in state-owned retail infrastructure, the government can take immediate action to cushion citizens against global inflation while creating meaningful employment across Guyana.
Steel dome supermarkets/warehouse is a simple and fast way to construct and put this plan in motion. Please consider my proposal that will benefit all Guyanese.
Regards,
Vishul Ishwaridin
