Following political independence from Great Britain in 1966, the PNC sought complete decolonisation by targeting “subtle colonialism” through the integration of Anti-Colonial Nationalism and Cooperative Socialism. To achieve economic autonomy and self-determination, Mr. Burnham declared Guyana a Cooperative Republic in 1970 and executed several key initiatives.
Structural ties with former colonial powers were severed. Key industries were nationalised, bringing them under State control. Self-reliance was promoted with the “Feed, Clothe, and House” campaign to foster national unity and independence.
If we don’t critically analyse the historical consequences of such actions, if we don’t learn from the past, we are condemned to repeat it.
