Restore Farnum Playground fully to the community — Aisha Fraites, Bonita Harris & 29 others — Opinion

Dear Editor,

Residents of Subryanville have been waiting since September 2025 for the Government to restore Farnum Playground fully to the community. Farnum Playground was designated for recreation and rest and as a community green space, but has been partially occupied by a private business.

Residents have engaged with the Central Housing and Planning Authority^[1], the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, the Mayor and City Council, the Ministry of Education and more recently the Ministry of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation.

We note that the CH&PA are enforcing the law in parts of Georgetown and more recently in Herstelling, but for some reason the Government seems silent on their inability to follow the law and procedures at Farnum Playground.

We call again on the Government of Guyana, through its various agencies to explain the path to ensure that Farnum Playground is restored fully to the community.

We urge citizens to be vigilant and protect their community green spaces.

Cease and Desist Order for Illegal Supermarket Operation on Middle St. - CHPA - Central Housing & Planning Authority ##### +592 226-5533 # Cease and Desist Order for Illegal Supermarket Operation on Middle St. March 28, 2026 March 28, 2026 The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), through its Enforcement Department, has issued a cease and desist order to the operator of a supermarket located at 92 Middle Street, Georgetown, for operating without the necessary approvals in violation of the Town and Country Planning Act, Cap. 20:01, Laws of Guyana. On Friday, officers from the Enforcement Department visited the establishment and served an order instructing the operator to immediately cease the illegal operation. However, when officers returned to the location today, Saturday, the establishment was found open and conducting business as usual. The Authority noted that more than two months ago, when construction activity was observed at the building, the agency made adequate enquiries with both the owner of the property and the tenants. Despite these efforts, no information regarding the intended use of the building was provided to the Authority. As a result of the continued non-compliance, another cease and desist order was served today by members of the Enforcement Department. CH&PA wishes to remind property owners and businesses that all commercial operations must receive the necessary approvals in keeping with the provisions of the Town and Country Planning Act.
