Guyanese of all walks of life have always enjoyed the seawall for picnics, leisurely walks, serene contemplation of the ocean, and so on.
Thus, it is very tragic that in many areas villagers are dumping garbage with impunity on the erstwhile pristine rocks and beautified structures that protect and adorn their villages.
As one example, when I walk along the Ocean View, Uitvlugt sea wall, I see huge amounts of smelly household refuse littering these beautiful rocks.
I call on the Government of Guyana to institute a series of penalties, or “littering fines”, that would deter potential violators from dumping. Villagers who are directly affected by such pernicious practices should confidentially report violators to ensure compliance.
I am confident that such measures will lead to attractive, pristine and unsullied coastal walkways in Guyana.
