Dear Editor,
We have now discovered that we have a very important mineral in our country, uranium. That discovery has many implications. Today though it should be looked at from our country’s interest.
As we are all aware one of the biggest problems we have is energy. It has bugged us since the 1970s. At the moment we are spending heavily, really extensively on renting power ships.
The Gas to Energy project is way behind schedule. Moreover, who knows when Exxon Mobil will tell us that they cannot give us any gas and that they need to use it to re-inject in the oil wells. After all it is not in the contract of 2016 that we get gas, and we believe in “sanctity of contracts”.
Therefore, we should look at what agreements we sign in relation to our uranium. We should ensure that we have a handle on it. We must be prepared to resist the pressures that may come on us from the warmongers in the “department of war”.
Uranium is one of the best, cleanest, cheapest and reliable sources of energy. We should think about building a nuclear power plant or plants in our country. This would be the most viable solution to the energy question in Guyana.
Further we should invite the company/companies with the most experience in this area to build such a facility. It is widely recognised that Russia is leading in this particular technology, therefore, we should invite them to work with us on such a project.
