We need to adhere to judicial safety nets

Dear Editor,

In my discourse with you today, I will be making two requests taken against the backdrop of existing circumstances. Firstly, Mr Prem Narine in his private capacity needs to institute charges of attempted murder against Azruddin Mohammed; and all charges should read thus. Reasons being, Mohammed was the aggressor, he was found encircling Mr Narine’s residence and as such, should be criminally responsible for his actions that fateful night. Try convincing me or anyone with even half a brain, that someone can be seen encircling my home where shots were fire and the suspect is not charged with an attempted murder charge? It certainly defies intelligence, and as a consequence, it is mandated that there be an unhindered, transparent and efficient progression of judicial actions. It implies that justice moves steadily and progressively forward, without artificial delays or political bottlenecks.

In the second matter involving Police Constable Greene, the magistrate’s decision to have him held in custody until court date November 24Th, should be upheld. That decision was sagacious, sound judgement with keen insight, this means that Constable Greene’s safety can be assured. What Constable Greene has done is called “snitching,” and in the criminal underworld punishment for breaking that code of silence is death. Evidence of such morbid occurrences have plagued us in the region, and right here in Guyana. So, for us to get a clean, fair and transparent trial, we need to adhere to these judicial safety nets. Guyana must remain a zone of peace and quiet, and the time for that is now!
