Dear Editor,
As a public analyst, I continue to address various issues affecting Guyanese citizens, and I believe it is important to recognise that government-operated public transportation can play a significant role in improving the country’s transportation sector.
A national transportation system could create employment opportunities for bus drivers, introduce higher standards of road safety, and strengthen regulations governing public transportation and traffic management.
There are growing concerns surrounding the conduct of some minibus operators, including reports of drivers consuming alcohol or smoking while transporting passengers. Such practices can impair judgment and compromise the safety of commuters. Additionally, overcrowded minibuses and vehicles that are inadequately maintained present further risks to passengers and other road users.
Introducing a government-operated transportation service, staffed by experienced and properly trained drivers, would provide citizens with an additional, regulated transportation option. It would also establish greater accountability through structured employment, appropriate compensation, employee benefits, vehicle maintenance standards and professional operating procedures.
Countries such as Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados have established state-owned public transportation services, demonstrating examples of how governments can participate directly in providing transportation to their citizens. Guyana could examine these models and consider adapting elements that would suit its own national circumstances.
Beyond improving public transportation, such an initiative could provide greater employment stability for drivers, encourage professional standards within the industry and strengthen public confidence in the administration of essential services.
Public transportation should not be viewed solely as a commercial activity but also as an important public service. Guyanese citizens deserve safe, reliable and accessible transportation, and the establishment of a national government-operated transportation system deserves serious consideration.
