Dear Editor,
Your article titled ‘Attorney Kamal Ramkarran calls for the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition’ published on 16 January 2026[1] is an example of sensationalism I would not have expected from the Stabroek News, not believing it to be a tabloid. The calling for something is the taking of a positive action in the hope and expectation that it will bear fruit. I expect that the Leader of the Opposition will be elected at a meeting held in due course at the instance of the Speaker.
I did not call for that appointment, since I expect that it will happen sooner rather than later, but gave a comment as to my view of the situation and the importance of the constitutional position of Leader of the Opposition at the request of your reporter, not expecting it to be politicised and sensationalised.
I suppose this experience teaches me that Stabroek News is not the same as it was in the 1990s when, at the request of a well-known reporter, my father frequently gave his views and explanations for context and the reports were accordingly stronger but were never sensationalised or politicised. I hope that Stabroek News is not so changed from those times that you will not withdraw and correct my call, which never happened.
