Dear Editor,
Guyanese along with international partners agree that not completing the process for the selection of the Office of the Opposition Leader signals a crisis in our fledgling democracy. We are bombarded with Guyanese leaders who only present the problems politically, but not workable and credible solutions. We need credible leaders from the home to the Office of the President. Do not rely on the international partners to do what you as citizens are not doing for yourselves. Step out and call a spade a spade! Let’s take for example, the article in Stabroek News 1/17/2026, “Toshaos council Chair and Vice-Chair decline comment on the non-appointment of Opposition Leader.” They both stated, “I don’t want to get into politics”. Don’t these and all citizens know by now that we are living in a heavily politically-charged country? Don’t they know by now the inner workings of the Office of the Opposition Leader, which Stabroek News took the time to educate the Toshaos on in the article.
I will now make a bold statement followed by solutions. WIN has one option. Azruddin Mohamed needs to step aside and choose a strong, credible and vocal (male) WIN leader in the interim. Azruddin could still continue to serve as a member of Parliament and voice/fix the corruption. Focus on your legal battles – it is embarrassing Guyanese. The government has one option. With consultation with WIN, convene Parliament. There is precedent in other countries where the President or Prime Minister stepped in and selected an Opposition Leader. Guyana is not there as yet; our constitution is not there as yet.
It’s time to move on! Get going WIN and the government! Guyana and its land belong to God and no one else!
