On the eve of your passing, I want to single out, for special thanks and praises, the child advocacy efforts of Stabroek News through its thoughtful editorials, coverage of the work of civil society organizations with a child safety mission, and your publishing of compassionate and child-friendly letters from concerned citizens.
Although dark times are ahead, we can take some comfort in the words of Rabindranath Tagore, awarded the 1913 Nobel Prize for Literature: “Every child comes with the message that God is not yet discouraged of man.”
That Dr Rupert Roopnaraine (31 January 1943 – 23 February 2026), born while the second World War was still raging, was given the middle name Rabindranath after this Indian poet, reminds us of the shaping power of parents, especially fathers, on their sons – even, and especially, in difficult times.
